SacJazzCamp.org The Sacramento Trad Jazz Camp’s faculty band, Swaculty Fing, plays there version of “Undecided”.
Featured are Ed Metz Jr. – Drums, Eddie Erickson – Banjo, Westy Westenhofer – Bass/Tuba, Bob Philips – Piano, Bria Skonberg – Trumpet, Terry Myers – Woodwinds, Greg Varlotta – Trombone.
The annual Sacramento Traditional Jazz Camp hosts student jazz musicians from teenagers to senior citizens. Every summer, the camp is held for two weeks in the California Sierras. The camp is focused on improvisation, both individual and group, with an emphasis on taking theory into practice at all times. Students are igned to bands with players of similar ability and experience, and perform in a final concert. There are nightly performances and jam sessions, with campers and faculty participating. Campers receive semi-private lessons, group instruction, and attend theory classes.

In the eighties Munich’s Allotria Jazz Band always has been one of the most popular jazz bands at the Sacramento annual jubilee. I went through a video of many bands at the 1985 jubilee and unfortunately I found most of the filmed bands very disappointing. Loud, technical, fast, trying just to please the crowd for whatever sake, which usually was the musical content and I decided to use nothing for youtube purposes.
Then I came across this clip of the Allotria and became intrigued again.
Here they are playing the Dippermouth Blues. Rainer Sander, the clarinet and sax player is their leader and a medical doctor by profession. I have seen the band several times in Sacramento and was always impressed by the trombone player, a beer brew master by the name of Fritz Stewens. Pit Mueller is the trumpet player with the tropical helmet and I remember seeing their drummer Gregor Beck.
Interesting that in this clip obviously Gregor had a substitute. No other than Charlie Antolini, one of Europe’s most famous drummers.
