Anson Weeks and the Nob Hill Hotel Dance Band – You’re so and so, Brunswick 1932

Oakland-born Anson Weeks was king of Nob Hill hotel dance bands during the 1920s and 30s, with a long run at Hotel Mark Hopkins.
He formed his first band in 1924, and played in many famed Oakland and Sacramento hotels. In 1925, his band cut a test disc in Oakland for Victor Talking Machine Co., but, apparently, Victor executives failed to offer a contract, and the recording of “New Moon” was never issued. By the late 1920s the Anson Weeks orchestra was increasingly popular along the West Coast, because of nightly radio broadcasts from Hotel Mark Hopkins, for KFRC, and NBCs West Coast network. His “Lucky Strike Magic Carpet” radio program was broadcast coast-to-coast from the Mark on NBC during 1931

Pointdexter – Perfection Will Find Its Place (at Sacramento State Battle of the Bands)

June 19, 2009

Here’s yet another video from the CSUS battle of the bands, which took place on May 4, 2009. When I was in a band, we played with Pointdexter several times, and they’re all really cool people. The bass player is a more recent addition, so he’s the only one in the band I don’t really know, but he seems pretty talented.

Spin 45 – Signed, Sealed, Delivered (at Sacramento State Battle of the Bands)

May 13, 2009

This is another band that participated in the battle of the bands at CSUS on May 4. Each band was required to play two original songs and a cover, and Spin 45 chose this iconic Stevie Wonder tune.

Spin 45 took third in the battle of the bands.

Fate Under Fire at Sacramento State Battle of the Bands

May 11, 2009

On Monday, Fate Under Fire competed in the battle of the bands at CSUS. I played music with the drummer, Rob, for a while, but this was the first time I had seen this band perform. They were the last band in a lineup that included several bands of varying levels of talent. Despite their strong crowd response, Fate Under Fire didn’t place in the competition that night.

A story about the battle of the bands appeared in The State Hornet and is available online:
