Majority Leader Torrico Seeks Improvements to and Funding for Safe Surrender Law

May 24, 2009

(Sacramento) Following the recent death of another abandoned newborn in his state embly district, the second in three years, embly Majority Leader Alberto Torrico (D-Fremont) joined police and fire officials and representatives of the medical community at a capitol news conference to highlight his legislation to raise public awareness and improve the states Safe Surrender law. Majority Leader Torrico is carrying two Safe Surrender bills. AB 1048 would expand the time a newborn can be safely surrendered at a designated site from 72 hours to 30 days. AB 1049 would add the California Safely Surrendered Baby Fund to the state income tax return forms voluntary contributions section to raise funds to educate the public about the Safe Surrender law. Heres more in this embly Access video.
