What did they have in the towns of the old west?

July 10, 2009

I know they had saloons, no sure about medics, what else did they have?

Small towns had dry goods/mercantile store, selling anything that came in a bag, barrel, jar or can, such as sugar, flour, beans, coffee, tea, even hard candies. They sold fabrics, by the yard or by the bolt, dishes, pots and pans and even hardware. If they didn’t stock it, they ordered it via mail order (that’s how and why Mr. Sears started his catalog).
If you rode on/in it and it broke/died, you had to see the guy who owned the livery and stables. He boarded/rented/bought/sold horses, made/repaired/rented/bought/sold wagons, buggies, saddles/tack, and occassionally doubled as a cobbler/boot maker.
Undertaker/funeral parlor; no explanation needed. If there wasn’t one, the local barber took care of the final arrangements.
The barber usually substituted as a dentist; the red and white pole outside let everyone know that he could extract teeth.
If they were along a cattle trail, they probably had a bath house.
The hotels usually offered food and a bath, at an extra charge and some handled the mail service.
A gunsmith and a blacksmith were essential.
Depending on the size of the town and number of farms/ranches a doctor may travel between several towns and the surrounding areas, as would the preacher, lawyers and judges.
Some towns grew up beside the railroad tracks, so they had depots, which had telegraph services.
Others had stage coach stops.
Towns near the gold and silver mines had assayers.
And, they all had a cemetery.

What are the trendiest places in Sacramento?

July 10, 2009

I’m moving to the Sacramento area from Southern California and am wondering what is the trendiest neighborhood, trendiest restaurant, trendiest nightclub, trendiest women’s clothing boutique, trendiest coffee house? And where would I find these? K Street Mall? downtown near the state capitol? Westfield Downtown Plaza? Midtown? Old Sac? I’ve only driven around in these areas a few times but didn’t have time to really explore the area before I move up there to be near family.

I’ve loved Yelp.com for finding new places in any cosmopolitan area…

For my money, Land Park & East Sac are the best neighborhoods around.
Restaurants, try anything downtown – there’s a whole slew of popular new places that double as food / bar on Capital, on J, on 16th… drive around on a Saturday night and you’ll see where the lines are spilling out onto the street.
