John Wilder playing “Bayou Medley” on Plectrum Banjo

February 28, 2009

This is me playing a Bayou Medley of “Blue Bayou” and “When It’s Sleepy Time Down South” on a muted plectrum VegaVox IV banjo. The performance was during my half-hour solo performance, and I arranged it to fit in with this year’s theme of “Bayou To Broadway – The Banjo In America”.

The segment was taped at the Peninsula Banjo Band’s 36th Annual Banjo Jubilee on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 in San Jose, CA where I was a featured artist, along with Charlie Tagawa (with his fabulous son, Nori Tagawa also on banjo and Mary Horne on bass), Jack Convery (with the amazing Gary Neuman on piano) and Bill Lowrey. All of the soloists’ performances were stupendous!

The full day of banjo entertainment also featured several bands, including The Peninsula Banjo Band (the group that hosted this event), East Bay Banjo Club, Sacramento Banjo Band, Happy Time Banjos and The Devil Mountain Jazz Band – a top Dixieland band in California for over 20 years!

The bass player who accompanied my performance is Sam Morocco. I also want to mention that I will be featured as a solo artist again on Sunday, March 1, 2009 in Sacramento, CA at “Banjo-Rama”, probably the oldest annual jazz banjo convention and show in America. Banjo-Rama is hosted and produced by the Sacramento Banjo Band.

I hope you enjoy the music!
